Geographical Information System & Network Modelling
Geographical Information System (GIS) is the most effective means of capturing and recording of assets in the water supply industry, which also is the platform to the building of network models.
Digital mapping is the process by which a collection of site data is compiled and formatted into a virtual image (GIS software). The function of this technology is to produce maps of the pipe network that give an accurate representations of a water supply area, detailing major of pipeline arteries and other attributes such as valves, air valves, meters, reservoirs, storage tanks and PRVs. This technology also provides the calculation of distances from once place to another.
Geo-coding is a process of finding associated geographic coordinates (latitude, longitude) of water supply network from other geographic data, such as diameter, length, material and year of built of pipes. With geographic coordinates the features can be mapped and entered into Geographic Information Systems.
Integration of asset inventory
Development of a clean supply network of asset inventory system, where the inventory shall form the core component in proper clean water supply network infrastructure asset management. The inventory development is completed using GIS based software of MapInfo by existing platform to allow spatial identification combined with database application.
Updating of GIS is vital to ensuring the all asset attributes and information stored in water utility’s are a true reflection of the system and include all assets and their operating regime. Done by undertaking on-site investigations to collect pipe network and asset information and updating existing GIS information against verified information from site to restore the GIS accuracy and completeness.
RWS’ Network Modelling department undertake the construction, calibration and use of clean water distribution models covering the entire network from the production meter to the individual customer meters. The models we produce are tailored to our individual customers needs, be it in the form of planning for future demand increases on the network, understanding the existing set up or improving operational efficiency. Our models are built using the latest technology on the market by our fully trained staff members who build, field test and calibrate the models. Live flow and pressure data is combined with the latest customer billing records, to ensure the models provide a true reflection of network flows and headloss across the system.
